In a Leagues Cup clash that delivered everything from clinical finishing to nerve-wracking drama, Cruz Azul emerged victorious over LA Galaxy in a 9–8 penalty shootout after the match ended 1–1 in regulation.
First Half: Cruz Azul Strikes First
Cruz Azul came out with intensity and were rewarded in the 22nd minute. Carlos Rodríguez slotted home a well-placed left-footed shot from the center of the box, assisted by Carlos Rotondi. The goal carried an xG of 21% and gave Cruz Azul a deserved 1–0 lead.
Though LA Galaxy looked to respond through Marco Reus and Joseph Paintsil, both were denied by a solid performance from goalkeeper Kevin Mier. Cruz Azul had further chances from Rotondi and Ditta but couldn't extend their lead before the break.
Halftime: LA Galaxy 0 – 1 Cruz Azul
Second Half: Galaxy Fights Back
The Galaxy shifted gears in the second half and began pressing higher. Their persistence paid off in the 81st minute when Gabriel Pec found the back of the net with a composed left-footed finish (xG 43%) after a clever setup by Mauricio Cuevas.
Both teams had late chances to seal it in normal time. Luka Romero saw his low effort saved in stoppage time, while Levy and Rivero both tested Galaxy keeper Novak Micovic.
