Messi’s Second-Half Brace Powers Inter Miami Past Atlanta United, 3–1
By Alonso Contreras
Inter Miami CF delivered a clinical performance on the road, defeating Atlanta United 3–1 behind a second-half brace from Lionel Messi and a goal from Germán Berterame.
Atlanta United started with attacking intent, creating opportunities through Breel Embolo, Miguel Almirón, and Tristan Muyumba. However, Inter Miami’s defense did enough to withstand the early pressure, blocking several attempts and limiting Atlanta’s ability to turn possession into goals.
The breakthrough came just before halftime. In the 45th minute, Berterame rose to meet Luis Suárez’s cross and headed the ball home, giving Miami a crucial 1–0 lead. Messi helped build the move, completing a dangerous attacking combination between three of Miami’s key offensive players.
Messi Takes Over After the Break
Atlanta’s task became significantly harder after halftime. Messi struck twice in a four-minute span, delivering the decisive blow to the home side.
In the 56th minute, Berterame set up Messi inside the box, and the Argentine finished with his left foot to double Miami’s advantage. Just four minutes later, Messi found the net again, combining with Suárez and Berterame before calmly finishing from the center of the box to make it 3–0.
The two goals demonstrated Miami’s ability to punish defensive mistakes and turn promising attacking sequences into decisive moments. Berterame played a key role in both finishes, while Suárez contributed to the first goal and helped create the move leading to Messi’s second.
Atlanta Pushes Back, but Miami Holds On
Despite falling three goals behind, Atlanta continued to attack. Dayne St. Clair and Miami’s defenders faced sustained pressure as the hosts searched for a way back into the match.
Atlanta hit the post through Matthew Edwards in the 86th minute, coming close to finding a breakthrough. Three minutes later, Fafà Picault converted a penalty into the bottom-right corner, reducing the deficit to 3–1.
The late goal gave Atlanta a consolation, but Miami remained in control through the closing stages. St. Clair made another save in stoppage time to prevent the hosts from adding a second.
The Takeaway
Inter Miami’s victory was built on clinical finishing and the chemistry between Messi, Suárez, and Berterame. Atlanta created chances and showed determination, but Miami proved more efficient in the decisive moments.
Messi’s second-half double put the game beyond Atlanta’s reach, while Berterame’s goal and involvement in both Messi finishes highlighted his importance to Miami’s attack.
