The United States and Mexico faced each other at the Gold Cup final for the fifth time. A thrilling match with good rhythm ended with a 2-1 victory for the Mexican National Team. The United States opened the score with a header by Chris Richards. Club America Academy players and current referents Raul Jimenez and Edson Alvarez turned the score around for “El Tri”.
Javier Aguirre and Mauricio Pochettino brought their best XI to NRG Stadium. Luis Angel Malagon in goal: a solid midfield with Cesar Montes and Johan Vasquez; Edson Alvarez, Marcel TlRuis and 2”16-year old star Gilberto Mora in midfield; and Raul Jimenez as a solitary attacker. In the U.S’s case, Matt Turner returned to goal; Tim Remm and Chris Richard’s on defense; a solid midfield with Luca de La Torre and Tayler Adams; Malik Tillman and Sebastian Berhalter complemented an attacked consisted of Diego Luna and a fast Patrick Agyemang.
It did not take that goal for the United States to score its first and only goal. Sebastian Berhalter placed the ball in the area, it went partially high. Chris Richards went backwards and headed the ball that touched the pipes and barely went it.
Alexia Vega and Roberto Alvarado tried to the wings; but the effectiveness came through the middle via Marcel Ruiz. The Toluca midfielder placed the ball in the area where Raul Jimenez strike the ball with strength. A ball in the net, thrilled Mexican fans and an emotional celebration dedicated to his friend Diego Jota (Portuguese player that passed away in a car accidentdays before), were part of the game’s tie.
The second and definitive goal came through the air. A free kick by Alexis Vega and a double header started by Johan Vasquez concluded by captain Edson Alvarez gave Mexico the second and definitive goal, and thus the victory and tenth Gold Cup.
The second Mexican goal was VAR reviewed and given. A handball and potential penalty in favor of the HS National Team was not even revised. A draw seemed a more fair score.
Controverisl decisions , a fast and dynamic game and good plays were part of a final which level was higher than expected
Both teams, and Canada, will not compete h til the Workd Cup. The two finalists will see action until September.
