Correa and Lainez shine as Tigres dismantle Dynamo in Leagues Cup clash

In a thrilling and physical match at Estadio Universitario, Club Tigres overcame a competitive Houston Dynamo side with a powerful second-half display, clinching a 4-1 win in front of a roaring home crowd. Ángel Correa starred with a brace, while Diego Lainez and Ozziel Herrera added second-half goals to send Tigres into the next round with authority.

First Half: Tigres Strike Late

The opening 45 minutes were an even contest, with both teams testing each other’s backlines. Houston started well with a series of set pieces, including headers from Ethan Bartlow and Felipe Andrade, but Tigres’ keeper Nahuel Guzmán was alert and unshaken.

Tigres gradually grew into the match. Ivan López and Vladimir Loroña both came close, but it wasn’t until added time that the breakthrough came. In the 45+3’, Juan Brunetta found Ángel Correa at the top of the box, and the Argentine unleashed a precise low strike into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0 with an xG of just 5%.

Second Half: Houston Responds, Tigres Unleash

Just two minutes after the restart, Houston equalized. Brooklyn Raines found Ondřej Lingr free in the center of the box, and the Czech striker calmly placed it past Guzmán to level the score 1-1.

However, the equalizer only awakened Tigres’ attacking machine. In the 63rd minute, Diego Lainez picked up a loose ball outside the box and curled in a stunning left-footed shot to the top left corner, giving Tigres a 2-1 lead.

The floodgates opened from there. In the 70th, Ángel Correa bagged his second of the night with a composed finish inside the area, this time with a high-probability chance to make it 3-1.

Late Goals Seal the Result

Tigres kept pressing and dominated possession. Houston had one last push through Gabriel Segal and Amine Bassi, but both attempts were denied by Guzmán. Then in the 90+7’, Ozziel Herrera capped off the night, finishing a quick Tigres break with a sharp right-footed strike into the top corner after a feed from Juan Pablo Vigón.

Key Stats:

  • Shots on Target: Tigres 7 - 5 Houston

  • Possession: Tigres 56% - 44% Houston

  • Man of the Match: Ángel Correa (2 goals, 5 shots, 1 key pass)

Final Thoughts:

Tigres showed why they’re one of Liga MX’s powerhouses—responding decisively after Houston’s equalizer and dominating the game’s final 30 minutes. With Correa and Lainez both on form and depth on the wings through Herrera, the Mexican giants look poised for a strong run in the Leagues Cup.

Houston, despite a brave first hour, struggled defensively in transition and will need to regroup quickly as they head back to MLS play.
