Argentina needed extra time and plenty of resilience to overcome a fearless Cape Verde side, edging a dramatic 3-2 victory in Miami after one of the biggest scares of their 2026 FIFA World Cup title defense.
The reigning champions entered the knockout clash as overwhelming favorites, but Cape Verde once again proved they belonged on football's biggest stage, pushing Lionel Scaloni's men to the absolute limit.
After a cautious opening, Lionel Messi produced another moment of brilliance in the 29th minute. Lisandro Martínez delivered a perfectly weighted long pass over the defense, and Messi controlled it effortlessly before lifting a clinical finish past Vozinha to give Argentina a 1-0 lead. It was yet another milestone for the captain, who continued to add to his remarkable World Cup legacy.
Argentina appeared comfortable heading into halftime, but the underdogs returned with renewed belief.
Cape Verde's pressure was rewarded in the 59th minute when Ryan Mendes found Deroy Duarte inside the area. From a tight angle, Duarte squeezed a low finish beyond Emiliano Martínez to level the match and stun the Argentine supporters.
Despite wave after wave of Argentine attacks and several outstanding saves from veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, the Blue Sharks held firm to force extra time.
Argentina regained the advantage almost immediately after the restart. Just two minutes into extra time, Alexis Mac Allister flicked on Messi's corner, allowing Lisandro Martínez to unleash a thunderous strike into the roof of the net for a 2-1 lead.
Yet Cape Verde refused to disappear.
In the 103rd minute, Sidny Cabral delivered one of the goals of the tournament. Cutting inside from the left, he curled an unstoppable effort into the top corner, leaving Emiliano Martínez rooted to the spot and bringing the match level once again at 2-2.
With penalties looming, Argentina finally found the decisive breakthrough in the 111th minute. Messi's corner found Cristian Romero, whose glancing header deflected off Cape Verde defender Diney Borges and into the net for an unfortunate own goal that ultimately decided the contest.
Cape Verde continued to fight until the final whistle, forcing Emiliano Martínez into several crucial saves during the closing minutes, but Argentina managed to withstand the late pressure and escape with a hard-earned victory.
The Albiceleste advance to the quarterfinals, but this performance served as a reminder that every step toward defending their World Cup crown will have to be earned. Meanwhile, Cape Verde exits the tournament with immense pride after one of the most inspiring World Cup debut campaigns in recent memory, earning global respect with fearless performances against some of football's biggest nations.
