Pochettino signs new deal to stay as USMNT head coach

On Monday morning, the U.S. Soccer Federation announced they were resigning the U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Mauricio Pochettino to a new deal that would have him as the USMNT’s head coach through the 2030 World Cup, which is being played in Morocco, Spain and Portugal.

“Mauricio has built a culture where players trust the group, trust the process and trust each other,” said U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone. “We saw the impact of that belief in the way the team grew, competed and performed on the world’s biggest stage. That culture, and the staff who helped build it, are exactly what we want to continue investing in for the Men’s National Team now and for the future. We are also excited about the experience and perspective Mauricio and his staff can bring across U.S. Soccer as we strengthen our pathways and seek to impact the broader soccer landscape in the United States.” 

Pochettino led the USMNT to the round of 16 in this past World Cup, winning their group outright for only the third time in the program’s history. He also secured the USMNT’s first win in the knockout stage since 2002 when they defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32 in Santa Clara, CA, and set the record for most tournament wins by a USMNT head coach. 

"Working together with U.S. Soccer over the past two years, it has become clear to us that there is tremendous potential to make the Men’s National Team program even stronger,” said Pochettino. “The passion we experienced from the fans throughout the World Cup only strengthened our belief in what is possible here. We are excited by the opportunity to bring all our experience and knowledge to even more areas of U.S. Soccer while helping strengthen the pathways for players, coaches and teams across the Federation. We want to try to have a lasting impact on the sport in the country that has welcomed us so warmly and for that impact to extend beyond results on the field.” 

Since taking over the job in October 2024, Pochettino has a record of 17-2-12, reaching both the final four of the Concacaf Nations League and the final of the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2025. 

Before taking over as USMNT head coach, Pochettino had stints coaching both Paris St. Germain of Ligue 1 in France and Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League. His stint at PSG proved to be his most successful period, winning a Ligue 1 title in the 2021-22 season, as well as the Coupe de France in the 2020-21 season and the Trophée des Champions in 2020. With Tottenham, he reached the 2019 Champions League final, where they lost 2-0 to Liverpool in Madrid. He also finished runners-up with Tottenham in the 2015-16 season of the Premier League behind eventual winners Leicester City. Pochettino started his coaching career in 2009 as head coach of Spanish side Espanyol and has coached a total of 680 matches. 

Before his coaching career, Pochettino had a playing career that spanned 17 years, playing in clubs in his native Argentina, Spain and France. He was a member of the Argentine National Team in the 2002 World Cup. 

The United States Men’s National Team is scheduled to return to action in the September and October FIFA international window with a set of friendlies, before returning to Nations League play in November. World Cup qualifying in the Americas will begin in September 2027 and will carry on until 2029.
