Arias Sends Colombia Into Quarterfinals as Cafeteros Shut Down Ghana

By Cristina Burgos

Colombia continued their impressive 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a disciplined 1-0 victory over Ghana, combining attacking efficiency with another outstanding defensive display to secure a place in the quarterfinals.

Néstor Lorenzo's side controlled the match from the opening whistle despite suffering an early setback when striker Jhon Córdoba was forced off through injury after just eight minutes. His replacement, Luis Suárez, made an immediate impact.

The breakthrough arrived in the 14th minute. Suárez battled to keep an attack alive after his initial cross was blocked, recovered the loose ball near the byline, and delivered another dangerous ball across the six-yard box. Luis Díaz cleverly let it run, allowing Jhon Arias to arrive unmarked at the far post and fire a first-time finish past Lawrence Ati Zigi for what proved to be the winning goal.

Colombia dictated possession throughout the first half, creating several opportunities to extend their lead. Díaz came within inches of scoring before halftime, while Ghana struggled to create meaningful chances against the Cafeteros' organized back line.

After the break, Ghana attempted to increase the tempo with attacking substitutions, but Colombia's defense remained composed. The Black Stars enjoyed more possession than they had in the opening period but rarely threatened Camilo Vargas' goal.

The South Americans nearly doubled their advantage midway through the second half when Díaz finished a flowing move, only for VAR to correctly rule the goal out for offside. Moments later, the Liverpool winger was denied again by an outstanding save from Ati Zigi after being played clean through on goal.

Ghana continued to search for a late equalizer through Ernest Nuamah, Fatawu Issahaku and Antoine Semenyo, but Colombia's disciplined defensive structure left little space to exploit. Vargas was rarely tested as the Cafeteros comfortably managed the closing stages.

The narrow scoreline did not reflect Colombia's control, as Lorenzo's side once again showcased the balance that has made them one of the tournament's most complete teams. Strong defensively, composed in possession, and clinical when opportunities arise, Colombia advances to the quarterfinals with another clean sheet and growing belief that this squad can make a deep World Cup run.
