Atlético Madrid Advance to Champions League Semifinals Despite 2–1 Loss to Barcelona (Agg: 3–2)

By Alonso Contreras

Atlético Madrid are through to the UEFA Champions League semifinals after surviving a dramatic second leg, despite a 2–1 defeat to FC Barcelona at the Metropolitano. The result was enough for Atlético to progress 3–2 on aggregate, thanks to their commanding 2–0 first-leg victory.

Barcelona came out flying, with Lamine Yamal opening the scoring early in the 4th minute with a brilliant finish, before Ferran Torres doubled the lead in the 24th minute after a sharp assist from Dani Olmo. At that stage, the tie was level on aggregate and fully open.

Atlético responded before halftime through Ademola Lookman, who calmly finished a well-worked move to give the hosts a crucial away-goal cushion in the tie context, restoring their aggregate advantage and shifting momentum back in their favor.

The second half saw relentless pressure from Atlético Madrid, with chances falling to Julián Álvarez, Marcos Llorente, and Robin Le Normand. However, Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García produced several key saves to keep his side alive. Barcelona were reduced to ten men late on after a VAR-upgraded red card for Eric García, intensifying Atlético’s push for an equalizer that never came.

Despite Barcelona’s 2–1 win on the night, Atlético’s first-leg dominance proved decisive as they held on to a 3–2 aggregate lead and sealed their place in the semifinals.

Key Takeaways:

  • Atlético Madrid advance 3–2 on aggregate after first-leg 2–0 win.
