Bay FC Suffers First Defeat 3-1 against Angel City FC in the Second Week of NWSL

By Fernando Abarca

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Bay FC entered a new week in the National Women's Soccer League season, hosting statewide rivals Angel City FC. Both teams came into the matchup fresh off victories in their season openers, with Bay FC earning three points against the expansion side Denver Summit. However, the home side was unable to replicate that success, falling 3-1 at home.

The game took action in the early moments with an attempt from Bay FC, but Angel City quickly set the tone. The visitors struck first, breaking through Bay FC’s defense to make it 1-0.

After conceding, Bay FC responded with greater aggressiveness, creating chances, opening space, and building more fluid attacking sequences. Their intensity, however, came at a cost, as Maddie Moure was shown a yellow card following a late challenge.

Angel City extended their lead with a well-worked play inside the box, as Sveindís Jónsdóttir delivered a precise assist to Gisele Thompson, who finished cleanly to make it 2-0. Jónsdóttir, one of the standout performers of the first half, later received a yellow card of her own after a tactical foul to stop a Bay FC counterattack.

Bay FC continued to push forward before halftime, generating a handful of opportunities but failing to convert. Jónsdóttir nearly added another for Angel City, but her effort was deflected by a Bay FC defender, keeping the deficit at two heading into the break.

In the second half, Bay FC came out with renewed urgency. Cristiana Girelli found herself with a clear scoring opportunity but was unable to capitalize, missing a crucial chance to shift momentum.

Angel City ultimately put the game out of reach with a set piece. Jónsdóttir delivered a dangerous ball from a corner kick that was met with a powerful header, extending the lead to 3-0 for the Southern California side.

Bay FC refused to go quietly and found a breakthrough when Taylor Huff produced a strong effort to beat the Angel City defense and get the home side on the scoreboard, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The match grew increasingly physical in the final stretch, with multiple fouls disrupting the flow. Bay FC’s J. Anderson was forced to leave the match in the 66th minute due to injury, prompting a substitution that further challenged the team’s rhythm. Additional substitutions followed on both sides as legs tired, with Angel City managing the tempo and protecting their lead.

Despite a late push, Bay FC could not complete the comeback. Two yellow cards were issued during stoppage time; Taylor Huff was issued a red one in the final minute of stoppage time. The accumulation of fouls and bookings reflected the intensity of the rivalry.

At the final whistle, Bay FC fell 3-1, suffering their first defeat of the season with controversial referee decisions, while Angel City FC remained perfect to start the campaign. Bay FC will look to regroup and sharpen their finishing as they prepare for their next fixture vs North Carolina Courage, aiming to bounce back from this result
