Bosnia Defeats Qatar in Final Group Stage Match to Advance to Round of 32

By Niko Antoun

Seattle, WA-A final high-stakes group stage game took place in Seattle between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar, who both went into the game from tough losses from the second matchday. Qatar, especially, suffered a grueling 6-0 loss to Canada at BC Place, as well as being down to nine players in that match, where Bosnia fell to Switzerland 4-1 at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, California. The Bosnians painted Seattle blue and yellow, showing up in overwhelmingly large and loud numbers, where pockets of proud maroon and white filled the south end of the stadium.

Bosnia Head Coach Sergej Barbarez congratulated his team after the match, saying, translated from Bosnian, that ā€œthere’s always someone who has certain qualities, who has hope, who wants to beat you … We came as clear underdogs, trying to do something big, and now that’s come true.ā€

66,925 fans came to Seattle Stadium on another hot June afternoon, where Bosnia won 3-1, preventing Qatar from having a chance at progression and ultimately eliminating them from the World Cup. The Bosnian victory meant that the team would very likely finish as a top-performing third-place team, and a possible Round of 32 opponent will be the United States depending on other results.

The final standings of Group B have Switzerland topping the group over Canada, with Bosnia advancing as a top-eight third-place team into the Round of 32. Qatar’s World Cup journey ends in Seattle; however, the players and coaches are proud of their national team for keeping their heads up. Despite finishing bottom, this World Cup will be a historic tournament in Qatar’s history, as the team earned its first-ever World Cup point.

ā€œI want to say to the fans: we will come back stronger … still, the team is young,ā€ said Qatar midfielder Karim Boudiaf, following the result. ā€œWhen we concede the two goals, 2-0, is not easy. But the goal we scored, the 2-1, they give us some energy and we feel we can it. I feel from inside we can do it … we played against a very, very, very good team, and this is football.ā€

Both sides treated this match as a must-win, and since Bosnia entered the matchday with the superior goal difference, they had the slight edge on Qatar. A draw between Bosnia and Qatar would guarantee the Bosnians third place; however, two points may not be enough to make the cut of the top eight third-placed teams across groups. A win for either side would have increased the chances of advancing significantly.

The other match in Group B, which played concurrently with Bosnia and Qatar, featured Canada and Switzerland battling for the top spot in the group, which ended as a 2-1 Swiss victory at BC Place.

Bosnian star and captain, 40-year-old veteran Edin Džeko, started in this match, where he also played 63 minutes against Switzerland and logged 64 minutes against Qatar. Dzeko and his teammate Sead Kolasinac are the only two players in Bosnia’s 2026 World Cup squad that were also involved in their previous World Cup appearance in 2014.

Bosnia started the match with threatening attacking plays, finding two shots within the opening minutes of the game, though Qatar proved just as dangerous, especially on the counterattack. Bosnia struck first blood with a wonder strike by Kerim Alajkbegovic from over 20 yards out, finishing in Mahmud Abunad’s near top corner. The Bosnians literally shook Seattle Stadium in celebrations, and momentum was in Bosnia’s favour from the 30th minute.

The Bosnians doubled their lead minutes after their first goal, after Dzeko volleyed a low cross deep in the box and deflected off Qatari defender Sultan Al Brake to register as an own goal.

ā€œIt has been a pity that they (Bosnia) scored an incredible goal,ā€ Qatar Head Coach Julen Lopetegui said about Bosnia’s first goal. ā€œThey achieved an incredible goal without half the chances, and after, I think the second goal, we can do a little bit better. After that, we recover the control.ā€

All Qatari flags were waving on the south fan side of the stadium after their goal, as Qatari hopes were restored when the team took one goal back at the 42nd minute, after Hassan Al Haidos found the finish off a low, close-range cross from Edmilson Junior. Minutes later, the Qatari almost completed a flash comeback after rattling Nikola Vasilij’s lower right-hand post, coming within margins of finding the equaliser.

In the earlier stages of the second half, the game felt relatively tame, as Bosnia shifted focus to maintaining their one-goal lead, whereas Qatar continued their push to find a vital equaliser. Time was ticking for Qatar’s World Cup life, especially as the game entered the closing stages with no change in score from halftime.

In the latter period of the second half, Bosnia restored their two-goal lead on Qatar following a spell of shots on target. Substitute Ermin Mahmic was the player to finish a close-ranged shot off a low cross, throwing his shirt off in celebration of his second World Cup goal. Mahmic also came on as a substitute against Switzerland, scoring their only goal in that match.

ā€œThere are always things that weren’t exactly how we expected. But if we did, then it would have been a perfect match and we’d win four or 5-0,ā€ said Head Coach Barbarez, translated from Bosnian, talking about the challenge his side faced in this competitive match.

Qatar suffered a second-straight group stage exit from the World Cup as a direct result of this match; however, the team felt a different sense of pride and grit after their country’s second-ever World Cup appearance.Ā

After the match, Qatar Head Coach Julen Lopetegui spoke about the result and reflected on his team’s journey during this World Cup, saying ā€œWe were able achieve one incredible point in one incredible way against one very, very strong team as is Switzerland … The second match is very difficult to analyze, sometimes happens in football, we start losing without chance. They have the first chance, they score. After, we have one red card, so very tough to analyze this match because we played, I think, 65 minutes with ten players and 46 minutes with nine players. So that was not easy. The players suffered a lot, but they never surrendered.ā€
