San Jose Earthquakes earned a valuable away win after defeating Philadelphia Union 1–0 in a tightly contested match in Major League Soccer action.
Philadelphia controlled long stretches of the first half and generated several early chances. Efforts from Agustín Anello, Bruno Damiani, and Frankie Westfield kept the San Jose defense under pressure, while Indiana Vassilev nearly opened the scoring just before halftime with a shot from inside the box that forced a strong save from goalkeeper Daniel De Sousa Britto.
San Jose also created opportunities of their own through Preston Judd and Niko Tsakiris, but Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake delivered important stops to keep the match level heading into the break.
The decisive moment arrived in the 59th minute. Ousseni Bouda found space inside the penalty area and finished calmly with a right footed shot into the bottom corner. The attacking sequence began with Timo Werner, who provided the assist, while Niko Tsakiris added the secondary pass in the buildup.
After conceding, Philadelphia pushed forward in search of an equalizer. Chances from Jesús Bueno, Alejandro Bedoya, and Stas Korzeniowski kept the pressure on the San Jose defense. In the 85th minute, Vassilev forced another important save from Britto, while Bedoya’s header moments later was blocked inside a crowded penalty area.
The Union came closest in stoppage time when Korzeniowski rose for a header in the center of the box, but the effort drifted wide of the target as the final whistle confirmed the result.
The victory highlighted San Jose’s defensive resilience and efficiency in front of goal, while Philadelphia will be left frustrated after controlling large portions of the match but failing to convert their chances.
