Cincinnati Edge Dramatic Contest at Soldier Field

By Rene Vidal

FC Cincinnati secured a dramatic 3–2 victory over Chicago Fire FC in a match defined by momentum swings, disciplinary incidents, and a decisive moment deep into stoppage time.

First Half – End-to-End Action

Chicago began with attacking intent and were rewarded in the 16th minute when Hugo Cuypers opened the scoring with a composed finish inside the box. The home side’s early pressure, driven by Philip Zinckernagel and Anton Salétros, created consistent problems for Cincinnati’s back line.

Cincinnati responded quickly. Evander equalized in the 24th minute, reacting sharply in the penalty area to bring the visitors level. Chicago regained the lead just four minutes later, as Cuypers struck again following a well-worked attacking move involving Zinckernagel and Salétros.

However, Cincinnati showed resilience once more. Evander scored his second of the match in the 31st minute with a precise effort from outside the box, ensuring the teams went into halftime level at 2–2.

Second Half – Control, Discipline, and Missed Chances

The second half saw Chicago push for control, particularly after Cincinnati were reduced to ten men in the 56th minute when Kyle Smith was shown a red card.

Despite the numerical advantage, Chicago struggled to convert their dominance into goals. Multiple efforts from Cuypers, Zinckernagel, and Maren Haile-Selassie were denied by an outstanding performance from Roman Celentano, who produced a series of crucial saves to keep Cincinnati in the match.

Cincinnati, meanwhile, remained dangerous on the counterattack, with Kévin Denkey and supporting attackers providing a constant outlet.

Late Drama – Decided from the Spot

The match’s defining moments came in stoppage time.

In the 91st minute, Chicago were awarded a penalty that could have given them the lead. However, Cuypers’ effort was saved by Celentano, preserving the deadlock and shifting momentum decisively.

Moments later, Cincinnati capitalized. A penalty was awarded in the 97th minute, and Evander stepped up to complete his hat-trick, calmly converting to give the visitors a 3–2 lead.

Chicago pushed forward in the final minutes, but despite late attempts, they were unable to find an equalizer.

Key Performers
