England booked their place atop Group L with a composed 2-0 victory over a determined Panama side, overcoming a stubborn defensive display before second-half goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane sealed all three points.
Although the Three Lions dominated possession from the opening whistle, Panama refused to sit back quietly. In fact, the Central Americans nearly stunned England inside the opening 10 seconds when Tomás Rodríguez tested Jordan Pickford with the fastest shot on target England have faced in a World Cup match since records began.
Thomas Tuchel's side responded by controlling the ball for long stretches, with Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka providing constant danger down the wings. Rashford forced an early save from Orlando Mosquera, while Saka repeatedly found space but couldn't convert England's territorial dominance into goals before halftime.
Panama remained organized defensively and looked threatening on the counterattack. José Luis Rodríguez twice found openings behind England's back line, forcing Pickford into an important save, while the underdogs reached the break having frustrated one of the tournament favorites in a scoreless first half.
England finally found the breakthrough just after the hour mark.
Following a well-delivered corner from Saka, Jude Bellingham reacted quickest inside the penalty area, producing an instinctive left-footed volley that skipped into the bottom corner to give England a deserved 1-0 lead.
The goal immediately shifted the momentum.
Just five minutes later, Bellingham turned provider. Chasing down a long ball, the midfielder lifted a perfectly weighted header across goal for Harry Kane, who powered home from close range to double England's advantage. The strike saw Kane become England's all-time leading scorer at FIFA World Cups.
Despite falling two goals behind, Panama continued to attack with confidence. Ismael Díaz and José Fajardo both threatened to reduce the deficit, while Fajardo thought he had finally ended Panama's goal drought deep into stoppage time. However, celebrations were cut short as the assistant referee correctly ruled the effort out for offside after a tight review.
England comfortably managed the closing minutes to secure the victory and finish first in Group L, setting up a Round of 32 meeting with Senegal.
While the result was convincing, Tuchel will likely be concerned by the defensive spaces his side allowed throughout the match. Panama created several dangerous transitions despite failing to score, exposing areas England will need to tighten before the knockout stage.
For Panama, the tournament ends without a goal but not without pride. The Canaleros competed bravely against one of Europe's elite, defended with discipline for over an hour, and continued to push forward until the final whistle despite the odds.
England now shifts its focus to the knockout rounds with momentum on its side, while Panama departs the World Cup having earned respect through its resilience and determination.
