Updated: Jun 5

“FESFUT and FPF confirmed through their social networks an international friendly before the start of Copa America in American Soil.”

The Salvadoran Federation of FESFUT confirmed that the El Salvador team will have a friendly match against Peru next June as part of the preparation for the World Cup qualifiers but that it will also serve the South American team to prepare for the Copa América that starts that same month.

The match will take place on June 14, and the confirmed venue will be at the Subaru Park stadium in Pennsylvania, in the United States. At this venue, El Salvador will have a friendly match in a month, during which several international commitments are coming up for the El Salvador head coach, David Dóniga.

This friendly will come after the match against Cádiz, which will serve as the inauguration of the renovated "Mágico" González stadium. The team will face Puerto Rico at the start of the qualifiers on June 6 and then, on June 9, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in a duel that will be played on Caribbean soil.

La Selecta is expected to find another rival to prepare for the upcoming qualifying round matches.

History Between El Salvador and Peru

The series between these two national teams is very even. Since 2009, El Salvador and Peru have faced each other four times, with two victories for each national team. All of these games were held in the United States. The first game in 2009 ended with a win for El Salvador with a minimal 1-0 in Los Angeles.

The most recent episode of El Salvador-Peru was in September 2022 at Audi Field, home of the D.C. United in Washington, D.C. The South Americans won 4-1. Peru took the lead on the scoreboard with Eriq Zavaleta's own goal. Despite Salvadoran Alex Larín's equalizer from a penalty, goals from Lapadula, Reyna, and Cueva rounded off the victory.  Hugo Pérez was the coach for La Azul y Blanco

Three years earlier, in March 2019, with the Azul directed by Carlos de los Cobos, La Bicolor left the RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. with a 2-0 defeat. An own goal from Trauco and a goal on the hour mark from Oscar Cerén filled the records of that friendly.

In 2016, El Salvador lost 3-1 to Peru, again in Washington D.C. The Incas reached the 80th minute, winning 2-0 with goals from Ruidíaz and Polo. After Nelson Bonilla's stoppage time in the 81st minute, Yotún sealed the result in extra time.

June will be a busy month for our Latin American nations; with Copa America and the World Cup qualifiers just around the corner, every opportunity to prepare counts.
