Canada fought back from a goal down to earn a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their World Cup Group B opener, with substitute Cyle Larin making an immediate impact in front of an energized home crowd.
Despite controlling large portions of the match and creating several dangerous opportunities, Jesse Marsch's side found themselves trailing midway through the first half. Bosnia capitalized on a set piece in the 21st minute when Sead Kolašinac flicked on a corner delivery, allowing Jovo Lukić to nod home from close range and silence the Canadian supporters.
Canada responded positively and enjoyed the majority of possession throughout the contest. Jonathan David, Tajon Buchanan, and Tani Oluwaseyi repeatedly tested the Bosnian defense, but a combination of missed chances and strong goalkeeping from Nikola Vasilj kept the hosts behind.
The Canadians came agonizingly close to leveling the match shortly after halftime. Richie Laryea appeared destined to score after a flowing team move, only for Kolašinac to produce a remarkable goal-line clearance that ricocheted off the crossbar.
As the clock ticked down, Marsch turned to his bench for answers. The changes transformed the match.
Just two minutes after entering the game, Cyle Larin delivered. In the 78th minute, Canada produced their best attacking sequence of the evening. Ismaël Koné drove forward before Promise David cleverly flicked a pass into Larin's path. The veteran striker powered past his defender and fired a low effort into the corner, with a slight deflection helping the ball beyond Vasilj to make it 1-1.
The equalizer ignited both the crowd and the Canadian attack. Larin nearly completed the comeback deep into stoppage time when he found space inside the penalty area, but a crucial block from Tarik Muharemović denied what would have been a dramatic winner.
Bosnia also had opportunities to extend their lead earlier in the second half, with Maxime Crépeau producing an excellent one-on-one save to stop Ermedin Demirović.
In the end, both sides were forced to settle for a point after an entertaining and intense Group B battle.
For Canada, the comeback showcased the resilience and attacking depth Marsch hopes will carry the hosts deep into the tournament. For Bosnia and Herzegovina, the result may feel like a missed opportunity after leading for nearly an hour.
The draw leaves Group B wide open heading into the next round of fixtures, with both teams knowing every point could prove crucial in the race for qualification.
