Mbappé Brace Leads France Past Resilient Iraq After Storm-Delayed Clash

By Alonso Contreras

PHILADELPHIA — France overcame a lengthy weather delay and a determined Iraqi performance to secure a convincing 3-0 victory, with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice before Ousmane Dembélé capped off another dominant display from Didier Deschamps' side.

The match, interrupted for nearly two hours at halftime due to severe thunderstorms, demanded patience from both teams. Once play resumed, France quickly reasserted control to collect three valuable points and strengthen their position in the group.

France dictated possession from the opening whistle, but Iraq showed discipline defensively and refused to be overwhelmed. Their resistance finally broke in the 14th minute when Michael Olise slipped a pass into Mbappé, who unleashed a powerful strike from outside the penalty area that flew beyond Jalal Hassan Basil and into the corner. The spectacular finish marked Mbappé's 15th career World Cup goal, placing him among the tournament's all-time elite scorers.

Despite trailing, Iraq refused to fold. Ali Al Hamadi, introduced early after Aymen Hussein left injured, provided a physical presence up front and nearly rewarded his side with a goal before halftime. Meanwhile, France continued creating opportunities but entered the break holding only a one-goal advantage as heavy rain intensified over Philadelphia.

The severe weather eventually forced officials to suspend the match, sending both teams back to the locker rooms for an extended delay before conditions improved enough to resume play.

Once the action restarted, France wasted little time putting the contest out of reach.

A costly mistake while attempting to play out from the back gifted Les Bleus their second goal in the 54th minute. Iraq's short goal kick was intercepted high up the field, allowing Dembélé to square the ball for Mbappé, who calmly finished into an empty net for his fourth goal of the tournament.

The French attack continued to overwhelm Iraq's back line, with Olise striking the crossbar and several dangerous opportunities forcing Basil into multiple saves to keep the score respectable.

Dembélé finally earned his reward midway through the second half. Olise threaded another perfectly weighted pass into the winger's path, and the Paris Saint-Germain star buried a clinical finish across goal for his first-ever FIFA World Cup goal, sealing the 3-0 victory.

Although the final score reflected France's superiority, Iraq earned respect with an organized defensive effort and moments of attacking promise against one of the tournament favorites. Their commitment never faded despite facing relentless pressure from one of the deepest squads in world football.

For France, the performance once again highlighted the frightening quality of their attacking trio. Mbappé delivered another statement performance with two goals, Olise orchestrated the offense with two assists, and Dembélé added both a goal and an assist in a complete attacking display.

With six points from two matches, Les Bleus head into their final group-stage fixture full of confidence and looking every bit like one of the strongest contenders to lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy.
