Paraguay Stuns Germany in Historic Penalty Shootout to Reach the Round of 16

By Alonso Contreras

Paraguay produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, eliminating four-time champions Germany in a dramatic penalty shootout after a hard-fought 1-1 draw that stretched through 120 unforgettable minutes at Boston Stadium.

The victory sends La Albirroja into the Round of 16, ending Germany's tournament in heartbreaking fashion after goalkeeper Orlando Gill delivered a heroic performance between the posts.

Germany dominated possession from the opening whistle, but Paraguay's disciplined defensive shape frustrated Julian Nagelsmann's side throughout the first half. Despite controlling nearly every aspect of the game, the Germans struggled to create clear opportunities against Gustavo Alfaro's compact back line.

Paraguay struck first just before halftime with a devastating counterattack. Following a recycled corner kick, Miguel Almirón and Matías Galarza combined to create space before Galarza floated a perfect cross into the box. Julio Enciso timed his run to perfection and powered a header beyond Manuel Neuer, giving the South Americans a shock 1-0 lead against the run of play.

Germany finally found the breakthrough in the 54th minute. Florian Wirtz delivered a dangerous cross into the area, and Kai Havertz guided a clever glancing header into the bottom corner to level the match at 1-1 and breathe life back into the four-time world champions.

The equalizer sparked relentless German pressure. Jamal Musiala injected energy off the bench, Leroy Sané stretched Paraguay's defense, and Wirtz continued pulling the strings in midfield, but Gill repeatedly denied Germany with a series of outstanding saves.

The defining controversy arrived deep into extra time when Jonathan Tah appeared to score what looked to be the winning goal. However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out for a foul on Gill, preserving Paraguay's hopes and forcing the match to penalties.

The shootout delivered even more drama.

Gill immediately gave Paraguay the advantage by saving Kai Havertz's opening penalty before later denying Nick Woltemade with another crucial stop. Germany's Jonathan Tah then blasted his penalty over the crossbar, opening the door for Paraguay center back José Canale, who calmly buried the decisive kick past Neuer to complete a stunning 4-3 shootout victory.

The result marks one of the greatest World Cup victories in Paraguay's history, as Alfaro's resilient squad combined tactical discipline, defensive determination and nerves of steel to eliminate one of international football's traditional powers.

For Germany, it was a frustrating night defined by missed opportunities, a disallowed extra-time winner and costly mistakes from the penalty spot. Despite dominating possession and spending much of the match camped inside Paraguay's half, Die Mannschaft failed to find the clinical finishing needed to avoid one of the tournament's biggest surprises.

Paraguay now marches into the knockout rounds full of confidence, proving once again that organization, resilience and belief can overcome even the biggest names on football's grandest stage.
