By Alonso Contreras

Match Overview

In preparation for the 2024 Copa America, the Peruvian National Team played its final friendly match against El Salvador at Subaru Park in Chester, PA. El Salvador, already engaged in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, entered this match following a 0-0 draw against Puerto Rico and a 3-1 victory over St. Vincent. They currently hold third place in their group. Peru, under the guidance of coach Fosati, recently played out a 0-0 draw against Paraguay in Lima.

Match Details

The Peruvian team dominated the entire match, showcasing their superiority against an El Salvador side that left much to be desired. Peru took the lead through Edison Flores, who capitalized on a deflected shot from Cartagena. The ball rebounded off teammate Gianluca Lapadula and landed perfectly for Flores, who skillfully finished with his left foot, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

Peru maintained control for the majority of the game, playing mostly in the opposition's half. El Salvador had a few opportunities, but none posed a significant threat to Peruvian goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.

Key Moments

Lapadula had the chance to extend Peru's lead but missed a penalty. He also had two more opportunities to score but was unable to convert. Flores nearly added another goal but saw his shot go narrowly wide.

Peru made several substitutions, with Sonne being one of the standout players. He received the loudest applause from the Peruvian fans and displayed impressive skills, including accurate crosses and dynamic runs up and down the pitch. However, he still needs to improve his connection with his teammates.

Despite the victory, there are lingering concerns about the Peruvian team's overall cohesion as they head into the Copa America. Their opening match is scheduled for Friday, June 21st, against Chile in Dallas, TX.
