Ronaldo Makes History as Portugal Break Croatia Hearts in Dramatic World Cup Classic

By Mario Amaya

Portugal survived a late scare and produced a dramatic stoppage-time winner to defeat Croatia 2-1 in Toronto, booking their place in the Round of 16 after one of the most thrilling matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The first half belonged largely to Portugal, who controlled possession and repeatedly tested Dominik Livaković without finding a breakthrough. Bruno Fernandes, João Cancelo, Rafael Leão and Cristiano Ronaldo all came close, but Croatia's goalkeeper delivered an outstanding performance to keep the game scoreless at halftime.

Croatia emerged from the break with renewed energy and stunned Portugal in the 53rd minute. Josip Stanišić whipped a dangerous cross into the area, where Ivan Perišić controlled brilliantly before firing a low finish beyond Diogo Costa to give the Croatians a deserved lead.

Portugal responded by increasing the pressure, and after a VAR review spotted a shirt pull inside the penalty area, the referee pointed to the spot in the 66th minute. Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up with all eyes on him and calmly blasted his penalty down the middle, scoring his first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout match and leveling the contest at 1-1.

Both teams pushed desperately for a winner. Croatia nearly regained the advantage when Mateo Kovačić struck the post from long range, while Rafael Leão rattled the crossbar at the opposite end. The tension continued to build as the match entered an incredible period of stoppage time.

With extra time seemingly inevitable, Portugal found the decisive moment in the 94th minute. Leão burst down the left flank and delivered a perfectly weighted cross into the penalty area, where Gonçalo Ramos rose above the Croatian defense to power a magnificent header into the top corner, sending the Portuguese bench into celebration.

Croatia thought they had rescued the match moments later when Joško Gvardiol bundled home an equalizer deep into stoppage time, but VAR ruled the goal out for offside after a slight flick from Igor Matanović placed Mario Pašalić in an illegal position during the buildup.

The dramatic decision sealed Croatia's elimination and preserved Portugal's unforgettable 2-1 victory.

With the win, Roberto Martínez's side advances to a blockbuster Round of 16 showdown against Spain, setting up one of the most anticipated clashes of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
