Defending world champions Spain delivered one of their most complete performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Austria 3-0 in Los Angeles to book their place in the Round of 16 with authority.
After controlling possession from the opening whistle, Spain finally found the breakthrough in the 36th minute. A brilliant move through midfield saw Pedri release Marc Cucurella down the left, and the full-back calmly squared the ball across the face of goal for Mikel Oyarzabal, who finished from close range to reward Spain's dominance.
Austria struggled to generate meaningful chances throughout the first half, with Spain repeatedly threatening to extend their lead. Álex Baena struck the crossbar with a superb free kick just before halftime, while goalkeeper Alexander Schlager produced an outstanding save to deny Lamine Yamal moments later.
Austria attempted to respond after the break by introducing fresh attacking options, but Spain never allowed the momentum to shift. Instead, Luis de la Fuente's side doubled their advantage in the 66th minute when Baena delivered a pinpoint cross that Pedro Porro powered into the net with a well-timed header for his first international goal.
With the match firmly under control, Spain continued to dictate the tempo through intelligent possession and relentless movement. Austria's best opportunity arrived when substitute Sasa Kalajdzic headed over from close range shortly after entering the match, but it proved to be their only real threat.
Spain sealed the victory in the 89th minute with another beautifully crafted team goal. Cucurella, outstanding throughout the contest, surged down the left flank before finding Oyarzabal inside the area. The Real Sociedad forward calmly slotted home his second goal of the evening to complete a convincing 3-0 triumph.
The European champions showcased their technical quality, defensive organization, and attacking depth in a performance that sent a clear message to the rest of the tournament. Spain now advances to the Round of 16, where a heavyweight showdown against Portugal awaits in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the World Cup knockout stage.
