ATLANTA, GA — Spain delivered a statement performance at the FIFA World Cup 2026, dismantling Saudi Arabia 4-0 in Atlanta to move into a commanding position in Group H and remind the rest of the tournament why they entered as one of the favorites.
After a frustrating opening match in which goals proved difficult to find, Luis de la Fuente's side exploded into life with a relentless attacking display led by teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and an inspired Mikel Oyarzabal.
The breakthrough arrived in the 10th minute. Oyarzabal surged down the left flank and whipped a precise low cross into the six-yard box, where Yamal slid in at the back post to score his first-ever World Cup goal and give Spain a deserved lead.
The floodgates soon opened.
Just eleven minutes later, Saudi Arabia failed to clear a corner, allowing Oyarzabal to pounce from close range and double Spain's advantage. Three minutes after that, the Real Sociedad forward struck again, finishing a slick attacking move involving Dani Olmo to make it 3-0 before the half-hour mark.
Saudi Arabia struggled to cope with Spain's movement, pace, and technical quality. La Roja dominated possession, controlled midfield, and repeatedly carved open the Green Falcons' defense, while goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais was forced into several impressive saves to prevent an even heavier scoreline before halftime.
The second half offered little respite.
Only four minutes after the restart, Spain added a fourth goal from a corner kick. Marc Cucurella's close-range effort was initially saved by Al Owais, but the rebound ricocheted off defender Hassan Al Tambakti and into his own net, effectively ending any hopes of a Saudi comeback.
Despite the comfortable lead, Spain continued to create opportunities. Ferran Torres, Nico Williams, Mikel Merino, and Fabián Ruiz all contributed to the attacking pressure, while Pedri orchestrated the midfield with another outstanding performance before being substituted after recording a tournament-high six interceptions.
Saudi Arabia finally managed to test Unai Simón late in the match, but the Spanish goalkeeper remained largely untroubled throughout a contest dominated from start to finish by the European champions.
There was even time for a fifth goal in stoppage time when Ferran Torres found the net after a flowing team move, only for VAR to rule him narrowly offside and deny Spain an even more emphatic victory.
The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive 4-0 triumph and a performance that showcased the depth, creativity, and attacking quality of one of the tournament's strongest squads.
For Saudi Arabia, attention now turns to a crucial final group-stage match against Cape Verde, where qualification hopes remain alive despite the heavy defeat. Spain, meanwhile, leave Atlanta full of confidence after producing their most complete display of the World Cup so far.
With Yamal announcing himself on the biggest stage, Oyarzabal delivering a masterclass, and Spain's attack finally firing on all cylinders, La Roja sent a clear message to the rest of the field: they are finding their rhythm at exactly the right time.
