The Washington Spirit announced on Tuesday the signing of Italian forward Spfia Cantore from Italian powerhouse Juventus on a three-year deal with a team option, the club announced.

"Sofia is an important signing for this Spirit team as we continue to build up our roster to compete for trophies,” said incoming Head Coach Adrián González. “Her extensive experience in the Italian leagues and exceptional talent in the attacking third will help add a new layer for the Spirit moving forward.”
Cantore became the first Italian player in NWSL history. The 25-year-old striker has spent her entire career playing in Italy. Hailing from Northern Italy, Cantore started her career with Serie B side Fiammamonza in 2015. In 2017, she made the move to Juventus, making 120 appearances for the club, scoring 40 goals, and recording 20 assists. During her time with Juve, she won two Serie A trophies during her time with the club in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons and a Coppa Italia title in the 2018-19 season.
"I'm very proud to join this important club and grateful for their trust in my abilities,” said Cantore. “I'm excited to start this new chapter of my career as the first Italian player in the NWSL and can't wait to work every day with coach Adrián González and my new teammates. And of course, I'm thrilled to challenge myself in this great league! I'm looking forward to joining the team after the Euros and celebrating together with the fans.”
Cantore has represented Italy at the international level, representing Le Assure since 2020, scoring five goals in 37 appearances.
She will join the Spirit on July 1st when the FIFA transfer window opens.
