USA Cruise Past Australia to Book Place in Knockout Stage

SEATTLE, WA — The United States continued its impressive FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a commanding 2-0 victory over Australia at Lumen Field, securing a second consecutive win and taking a major step toward the knockout rounds.

Despite missing injured star Christian Pulisic, Mauricio Pochettino’s side looked sharp, organized, and in control from the opening whistle, overwhelming the Socceroos with their pace, pressing, and attacking movement.

The breakthrough arrived in the 11th minute through relentless pressure from Folarin Balogun. The striker burst down the left flank, leaving defenders behind before driving a dangerous ball across the face of goal. Australian defender Cameron Burgess, attempting to clear, could only divert the ball into the roof of his own net to hand the hosts a deserved 1-0 lead.

Australia nearly responded immediately when Mathew Leckie curled an effort narrowly wide, but that proved to be one of the few threatening moments for Tony Popovic’s side in a first half dominated by the Americans.

The assistant referee initially raised the offside flag, but a VAR review confirmed Freeman had been played onside, allowing the goal to stand and giving the United States a crucial 2-0 cushion heading into the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Australia introduced fresh attacking options, including Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe, but struggled to create clear opportunities against a disciplined American defense led by Tim Ream and Chris Richards.

The best chance of the half fell to Balogun in the 51st minute after a perfectly weighted through ball from Tyler Adams, but Alessandro Circati recovered brilliantly to block the striker’s effort.

Australia’s brightest moment came midway through the second half when Irankunda broke free and found Cristian Volpato inside the box, only for the midfielder to fire high over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.

As the match entered its final stages, the United States comfortably managed the game, frustrating Australia’s attempts to mount a comeback while continuing to threaten on the counterattack.

The result leaves the Americans in a strong position atop the group standings, while Australia now faces a must-win scenario in its final group-stage match to keep its World Cup hopes alive.

For the United States, it was another complete performance—solid defensively, clinical when it mattered, and further evidence that Pochettino’s squad is emerging as a dangerous contender on home soil.
