USMNT Sends Statement in World Cup Opener with Dominant Win Over Paraguay

The United States opened its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating Paraguay 4-1 in front of a packed and electric home crowd to claim three crucial points in Group D.

Mauricio Pochettino's side wasted little time taking control of the match and struck first in the seventh minute. Christian Pulisic ignited the move with a brilliant run through the Paraguayan defense before finding Weston McKennie. The midfielder's dangerous ball across goal forced an own goal from Damián Bobadilla, handing the Americans an early advantage.

The hosts continued to dominate possession and pressure Paraguay's back line, eventually doubling their lead in the 31st minute. Pulisic once again played provider, delivering a perfectly weighted pass into the box for Folarin Balogun, who calmly finished past goalkeeper Orlando Gill to make it 2-0.

Balogun wasn't done.

Deep into first-half stoppage time, Malik Tillman produced a superb through ball that split Paraguay's defense. Balogun raced onto it, cut inside his marker, and blasted a powerful finish into the roof of the net to give the United States a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.

Paraguay attempted to respond after the break and enjoyed more possession, but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against an organized American defense. The visitors finally found a breakthrough in the 73rd minute when Julio Enciso slipped a pass to substitute Mauricio, who finished clinically to reduce the deficit and briefly raise hopes of a comeback.

Any chance of a late rally was quickly extinguished by the Americans' continued attacking intent. With Paraguay pushing numbers forward, the United States found space on the counterattack and capped off the performance in stoppage time. Giovanni Reyna collected a pass from Freeman inside the penalty area and produced a brilliant outside-of-the-boot finish that curled beyond the goalkeeper to complete the 4-1 victory.

Balogun's two-goal performance led the way for the USMNT, while Pulisic, McKennie, Tillman, and Reyna all played key roles in an impressive attacking display. Defensively, the Americans remained largely comfortable throughout the contest despite conceding once late in the second half.

The convincing victory gives the United States an ideal start to its home World Cup and immediately places Pochettino's side among the early tournament contenders. With confidence soaring and the home crowd fully behind them, the USMNT could hardly have asked for a better beginning to their 2026 campaign.
