Vinícius Jr. Leads Brazil Into Knockout Stage With Dominant Victory Over Scotland

Brazil confirmed their place in the knockout stage in commanding fashion, defeating Scotland 3-0 in Miami behind a brilliant performance from Vinícius Júnior, whose first-half brace set the tone for another convincing display from Carlo Ancelotti's side.

Scotland actually began the match with confidence, keeping possession during the opening minutes, but one costly mistake completely changed the contest. In the seventh minute, Scott McKenna hesitated while attempting to play out from the back, allowing Rayan to steal possession before feeding Vinícius. The Real Madrid star calmly rounded goalkeeper Angus Gunn and slotted into the empty net to give Brazil an early advantage.

Brazil thought they had doubled their lead midway through the half after Vinícius capitalized on another defensive error from the Scottish back line. However, following a VAR review, the goal was overturned for a foul by the Brazilian forward in the buildup, giving Scotland a temporary reprieve.

The relief was short-lived.

Scotland attempted to respond after the break, producing their first effort on target of the match when Scott McTominay forced Alisson into a comfortable save from a header. The Tartan Army showed greater urgency as the second half progressed, but Brazil remained in complete control.

The Selecao put the game beyond doubt in the 60th minute with one of the finest team moves of the tournament. Casemiro split the Scottish midfield with a perfectly weighted pass to Bruno Guimarães, who surged into the penalty area before unselfishly squaring the ball for Matheus Cunha to finish into an empty net for Brazil's third goal.

Ancelotti then gave Brazilian supporters an emotional moment when Neymar made his long-awaited return to international football, entering the match in the 76th minute for his first appearance in Brazil's colors since October 2023. The stadium erupted as the legendary forward stepped back onto the World Cup stage.

Scotland continued to fight until the final whistle and nearly grabbed a consolation goal in stoppage time. After Alisson spilled a corner, Scott McTominay reacted quickly to fire toward goal, but the Brazilian goalkeeper recovered brilliantly to preserve his clean sheet with a spectacular point-blank save.

The victory completed an impressive group-stage campaign for Brazil, who combined clinical finishing with relentless pressing and defensive solidity throughout the night. Vinícius once again proved the difference-maker, while Guimarães orchestrated the midfield with two assists in another complete team performance.

For Scotland, the defeat leaves their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread, with goal difference now likely to play a decisive role in determining whether Steve Clarke's side can still reach the knockout rounds.
