HOUSTON, Texas — DR Congo marked its long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup with a historic performance, battling back to earn a 1-1 draw against Portugal in a memorable Group K opener that could go down as one of the biggest surprises of the tournament's opening round.
Facing a Portuguese side packed with stars and led by Cristiano Ronaldo, the Leopards refused to be intimidated, recovering from an early deficit and holding firm under intense second-half pressure to claim their first-ever World Cup goal and point.
Portugal looked destined for a comfortable evening after taking the lead just six minutes into the match.
Pedro Neto delivered a pinpoint cross into the penalty area, where João Neves rose above a crowded defense and guided a looping header into the top corner. The goal capped a dominant opening spell from Roberto Martínez's side, who controlled possession and barely allowed DR Congo a touch of the ball.
However, despite Portugal's territorial dominance, clear chances were difficult to find.
As the first half progressed, DR Congo grew into the contest and began creating dangerous opportunities of their own. Yoane Wissa narrowly missed the target after Aaron Wan-Bissaka's cross caused problems, while Cédric Bakambu forced Portugal's defense into several important interventions.
The Leopards' persistence was rewarded deep into first-half stoppage time.
Following a cleverly worked corner routine, Arthur Masuaku delivered a superb cross into the heart of the box. Newcastle United forward Yoane Wissa rose highest and powered a header into the top corner, scoring DR Congo's first-ever World Cup goal and sending the Congolese supporters into celebration.
The historic strike leveled the match at 1-1 moments before halftime and completely changed the atmosphere inside the stadium.
Portugal attempted to respond after the break, introducing Francisco Conceição, Rafael Leão, and Gonçalo Ramos in search of a winner.
The Europeans dominated possession but struggled to break down a disciplined Congolese defense marshaled by Chancel Mbemba and Axel Tuanzebe. Goalkeeper Dimitry Mpasi was equally impressive, confidently dealing with crosses and commanding his penalty area throughout the second half.
Portugal thought they had regained the lead in the 55th minute when João Cancelo produced a spectacular bicycle kick finish, but celebrations were cut short as the assistant referee's flag ruled the Barcelona fullback offside.
The closest either side came to finding a winner arrived at opposite ends of the field.
Bakambu rattled the post midway through the second half after muscling past Bruno Fernandes, while Cristiano Ronaldo squandered Portugal's best opportunity in the 68th minute, dragging a close-range effort wide after Conceição's cutback found him unmarked inside the box.
As the clock wound down, Portugal continued to push forward. Fernandes narrowly missed from distance, Cancelo delivered a dangerous cross that Mpasi smothered before Ronaldo could connect, and the Leopards were forced into a series of crucial defensive interventions.
Yet DR Congo never broke.
After five tense minutes of stoppage time, the final whistle confirmed a historic result for the African side.
For Portugal, the draw will feel like a missed opportunity. Despite controlling possession and completing passes at an extraordinary rate, Martínez's team lacked creativity in the final third and struggled to turn possession into meaningful chances.
For DR Congo, however, the result represents a landmark moment in the nation's football history.
Playing in their first World Cup match since 1974, the Leopards not only scored their first goal in the competition but also earned a deserved point against one of Europe's traditional powers.
With the group now wide open, DR Congo leaves Houston with belief and momentum, while Portugal departs knowing there is little room for error in the matches ahead. On a night of history and resilience, the Leopards announced their return to the world stage in unforgettable fashion.
