Inter Miami CF Survive Nine-Goal Thriller Against Philadelphia Union in Wild 6-4 Victory

By Alonso Contreras

In one of the most chaotic and entertaining matches of the MLS season, Inter Miami CF outlasted Philadelphia Union 6-4 in a breathtaking contest filled with momentum swings, penalties, late drama, and attacking brilliance.

The match exploded into life almost immediately. Philadelphia stunned the home crowd in the 4th minute when Milan Iloski opened the scoring after combining with Frankie Westfield and teenage playmaker Cavan Sullivan. Just minutes later, the Union doubled the advantage after Dayne St. Clair fouled Iloski inside the box, allowing the striker to calmly convert from the penalty spot for his second goal of the night.

Despite the early collapse, Inter Miami responded quickly through the connection between Lionel Messi and Germán Berterame. Messi threaded a perfect assist in the 13th minute for Berterame to finish from close range and cut the deficit to 2-1.

Philadelphia continued to attack aggressively and restored their two-goal lead in the 20th minute when Bruno Damiani finished inside the area after sustained pressure from the Union attack. But Miami refused to back down. Luis Suárez sparked the comeback in the 29th minute after being set up by Ian Fray, and the momentum completely shifted before halftime.

Messi once again became the creator in the 42nd minute, delivering another assist for Berterame to equalize at 3-3. Just two minutes later, Suárez struck again from inside the box to give Miami their first lead of the night at 4-3 after a relentless attacking sequence.

The first-half chaos was not over yet. Deep into stoppage time, Philadelphia earned another penalty after pressure inside the Miami area, and Iloski completed his hat trick from the spot to level the match 4-4 before halftime in a stunning opening 45 minutes.

The second half remained intense but slightly more controlled compared to the first-half madness. Miami nearly regained the lead early after Ian Fray hit the post and Messi saw a dangerous shot blocked inside the area. Philadelphia remained dangerous through Agustín Anello, Ben Bender, and Alejandro Bedoya, while goalkeeper Andre Blake produced important saves to keep the Union alive.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 81st minute. Germán Berterame forced a save from Blake before Suárez reacted quickest to finish the rebound from close range, completing his hat trick and giving Miami a crucial 5-4 advantage.

Philadelphia pushed desperately for another equalizer late in the match, but Dayne St. Clair made key saves, while Gonzalo Luján and Luis Suárez contributed important defensive blocks inside the box.

In stoppage time, Inter Miami finally sealed the victory. Mateo Silvetti drove forward on the counterattack before setting up Rodrigo De Paul, who calmly finished in the 93rd minute to cap off the spectacular 6-4 win.

Messi finished with two assists and orchestrated much of Miami’s attack, while Luis Suárez delivered a clinical hat trick in one of his best performances of the season. Germán Berterame added a brace, and Rodrigo De Paul provided the final touch in a match that featured nonstop attacking football from start to finish.

For Philadelphia, Milan Iloski’s hat trick and the performances of Cavan Sullivan and Bruno Damiani highlighted an impressive attacking display, but defensive lapses ultimately proved costly in a match that will be remembered as one of the wildest contests of the MLS campaign.
