NINE GOALS, TWO COMEBACKS AND CHAOS: PORTLAND TIMBERS SURVIVE MINNESOTA UNITED 5-4 IN MLS THRILLER

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Timbers and Minnesota United FC delivered an absolute MLS thriller, combining nine goals, multiple momentum swings and a dramatic finish as Portland held on for a 5-4 victory.

What looked like a comfortable Portland victory after a dominant first half turned into a completely different match after halftime. Minnesota fought its way back from a 3-0 deficit, eventually leveling the score at 3-3 before Portland responded again. Even after the Timbers moved two goals clear, Minnesota refused to go away.

The final minutes became a frantic battle, with chances at both ends and Minnesota pushing for an equalizer until the final whistle.

PORTLAND STARTS FAST

Minnesota actually created the first major danger of the match. In the opening minutes, Kelvin Yeboah hit the crossbar, while Jefferson Díaz also forced a save with a header.

But Portland quickly took control.

In the 11th minute, Vincent Janssen converted from the penalty spot to give Portland a 1-0 lead.

The Timbers continued to attack with purpose, repeatedly finding space in dangerous areas. Ariel Lassiter struck the crossbar in the 20th minute, and Portland doubled its advantage moments later through an own goal credited to Minnesota goalkeeper Drake Callender.

At 2-0, Portland had complete momentum.

Then came the third.

JANSSEN STRIKES AGAIN AS PORTLAND GOES 3-0 UP

In the 26th minute, Janssen found the back of the net again, finishing from inside the box after a combination involving David Da Costa and Eric Miller.

Suddenly, Portland had a 3-0 advantage and appeared firmly in control.

Minnesota, however, responded before halftime.

In the 32nd minute, Marcus Caldeira pulled one back, finishing inside the box after an assist from Joaquín Pereyra.

Six minutes later, Minnesota struck again.

Anthony Markanich scored from inside the box, with Kelvin Yeboah providing the assist, cutting Portland's lead to 3-2.

The Timbers entered halftime ahead, but the momentum had already begun to shift.

MINNESOTA COMPLETES THE COMEBACK

The second half started with Minnesota pushing forward.

In the 50th minute, Marcus Caldeira scored his second goal of the night, finishing from the center of the box to make it 3-3.

After being three goals down, Minnesota had completely erased Portland's advantage.

The match had become wide open, and both teams continued to attack.

But Portland responded almost immediately.

PORTLAND RESPONDS WITH TWO MORE

In the 55th minute, Vincent Janssen completed his hat trick, scoring his third goal of the night after an attacking sequence involving Ariel Lassiter and Cole Bassett.

Portland regained the lead at 4-3.

Then, in the 71st minute, Kristoffer Velde added another, cutting inside from the left side and finishing with his left foot.

At 5-3, Portland appeared to have finally put the game away.

But Minnesota had other ideas.

MINNESOTA REFUSES TO QUIT

The Loons continued to push forward, looking for another way back into the match.

In the final minutes, Minnesota created several dangerous opportunities. Tomás Chancalay had a header go wide, while Kyle Duncan also missed with a late header.

Then came the 92nd minute.

Tomás Chancalay scored to make it 5-4, finishing from the center of the box after an assist from Carlos Harvey, with Morris Duggan providing the second assist.

Suddenly, the pressure was back on Portland.

Minnesota had the momentum and continued searching for the equalizer.

A CHAOTIC FINISH

The final minutes were frantic.

Minnesota continued throwing players forward, while Portland fought to protect its one-goal advantage.

The Loons had another opportunity in stoppage time when Mauricio González fired wide from inside the box.

Moments later, Kyle Duncan sent another header wide.

Portland survived the late onslaught.

The Timbers eventually secured the 5-4 victory, ending one of the most entertaining matches of the night with all three points.

NINE GOALS, TWO COMEBACKS AND A WILD MLS NIGHT

The numbers tell the story, but they don't fully capture the chaos of the match.

Portland raced into a 3-0 lead, only for Minnesota to fight back and make it 3-3. Portland then restored its two-goal advantage at 5-3, but Minnesota once again found a way back into the game.

Janssen was the difference-maker for Portland, scoring three goals, including a penalty, while Minnesota's comeback was powered by goals from Caldeira, Markanich and Chancalay.

In the end, Portland's ability to respond every time Minnesota threatened to complete the comeback proved decisive.

Final: Portland Timbers 5, Minnesota United FC 4.

Nine goals.

Multiple momentum swings.

And a finish that had MLS written all over it.
