Houston Dynamo FC delivered a commanding and clinical performance under the bright lights of the Bronx, routing New York City Football Club 3-0 in a match that exposed defensive vulnerabilities and lackluster offensive execution from the hosts. Gabriel Segal was the star of the evening, registering a brace—one from open play and another from the penalty spot—to secure three points for a Dynamo side that was sharper, more physical, and ultimately far more efficient.
First Half: Hustle, Pressure, and an Own Goal Shock NYCFC
The match opened with a chaotic energy, both sides trading jabs through blocked shots, corners, and quick transitions. But it was Houston who seized control as their pressing game began to suffocate NYCFC’s midfield.
The breakthrough came in the 26th minute, albeit in the most unfortunate of fashions for the hosts. A dangerous corner delivered by Jack McGlynn caused havoc inside the six-yard box. In the scramble, New York City’s Justin Haak inadvertently redirected the ball into his own net with a mistimed clearance attempt. The own goal deflated NYCFC, who had been controlling possession but failing to create quality chances.
Houston surged in confidence after the goal, peppering Matt Freese’s net with efforts—most notably a fierce right-footed shot from Gabriel Segal in the 41st minute, which forced a strong save. NYCFC showed sparks of life through Alonso Martínez and Julián Fernández, but their shots were either blocked or off-target. Tayvon Gray's right-footed effort in the 18th minute and Jonathan Shore’s blocked shot in the 14th highlighted the lack of cutting edge.
By halftime, NYCFC were trailing and out of ideas, while Houston appeared comfortable and cohesive.
Second Half: Segal Seals the Deal
Houston began the second half in explosive fashion. Just five minutes after the restart, Gabriel Segal doubled the lead with a composed finish. Erik Dueñas fired a shot from a tight angle that Freese did well to parry, but the rebound fell to Segal who calmly slotted it home with his left foot from close range. It was a high-xG chance (97%) and he made no mistake.
NYCFC responded with urgency, flooding the attacking third with bodies and pushing for a goal that would drag them back into the contest. But the final pass often lacked precision, and when chances did come, they were squandered. In the 88th minute, Julián Fernández missed from the center of the box with a 12% xG shot that he dragged wide. Thiago Martins followed up with a header that also missed the target.
As NYCFC pressed higher, they left space behind—and Houston exploited it expertly.
Late Drama and a Final Blow
In stoppage time, substitute Duane Holmes drew a foul inside the box from Nico Cavallo. After a brief pause, the referee pointed to the spot, and Gabriel Segal stepped up with icy composure in the 94th minute. He struck a flawless right-footed penalty into the top left corner, sealing a 3-0 demolition and completing his brace.
It was Segal's night, and NYCFC’s nightmare.

What It Means
For Houston, this was a definitive statement win. Their pressing, organization, and ruthlessness in front of goal reflected a team in form and growing in confidence. Gabriel Segal’s clinical finishing could be the missing ingredient that propels them further up the table.
For New York City FC, the alarm bells are ringing. With defensive errors, missed opportunities, and a glaring lack of leadership on the pitch, head coach Nick Cushing will be forced to answer tough questions in the days ahead.
