Japan secured a disciplined 1–0 victory over the United States, with an early first-half strike proving enough to separate the sides in a tightly contested match.
The decisive moment came in the 27th minute, when Maika Hamano finished brilliantly with a left-footed effort into the top right corner after being set up by Maya Hijikata. The goal capped off a confident opening spell from Japan, who looked sharp and organized in possession.
The United States responded with attacking intent, creating several chances throughout the first half. Efforts from Emma Sears and Lilly Reale tested goalkeeper Akane Okuma, who delivered a composed performance between the posts to preserve Japan’s lead.
In the second half, the USWNT made multiple substitutions including the introduction of Trinity Rodman and Sophia Wilson in an attempt to shift momentum. The changes injected energy, and the U.S. pushed forward with urgency, creating dangerous moments in the final third.
One of the best opportunities came in the 71st minute, when Wilson’s close-range effort was denied by Okuma, who stood tall under pressure. Late in the match, the U.S. continued to press, with multiple blocked shots inside the box highlighting Japan’s defensive resilience.
Japan, meanwhile, remained dangerous on the counter and nearly doubled their lead through Manaka Matsukubo and Momoko Tanikawa, but the U.S. defense managed to hold firm.
Despite a late push including set pieces and attacking pressure in stoppage time—the United States could not find an equalizer. Japan’s organization, discipline, and early breakthrough ultimately secured the win.
