Atlanta United Take Control After Early Shock to Defeat CF Montréal 3–1

By Cristina Burgos

Atlanta United FC delivered a composed and authoritative performance to overturn an early deficit and secure a 3–1 victory over CF Montréal, showcasing their attacking depth and resilience over 90 minutes.

The visitors struck first, stunning the home crowd in just the 6th minute. Midfielder Matty Longstaff capitalized on a well-worked move, finishing clinically from close range after being set up by Prince Owusu. Montréal looked sharp early, nearly doubling their lead moments later when Wikelman Carmona rattled the post with a speculative effort from distance.

Atlanta, however, responded with growing intensity and control. Their equalizer arrived in the 41st minute through Saba Lobjanidze, who finished a fluid attacking sequence orchestrated by Alexey Miranchuk. The hosts continued to press, and just before halftime, they completed the turnaround. Emmanuel Latte Lath showed sharp movement inside the box to convert Miranchuk’s precise delivery, sending Atlanta into the break with a 2–1 advantage.

The second half saw Atlanta assert greater control, both in possession and territory. Montréal attempted to respond, with Prince Owusu testing goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos early on, but the hosts remained disciplined at the back.

Atlanta extended their lead in the 50th minute, once again through Lobjanidze. The winger demonstrated composure in front of goal, finishing confidently after being picked out by Cooper Sanchez. The goal effectively shifted momentum fully in Atlanta’s favor, forcing Montréal to chase the game.

Despite several attempts from distance and set-piece opportunities, Montréal struggled to break through Atlanta’s organized defense. Efforts from Daniel Ríos and Dawid Bugaj were comfortably handled, while Atlanta continued to threaten on the counter.

The closing stages grew increasingly physical. Both sides exchanged cautions, and Montréal’s frustration culminated in stoppage time when Brayan Vera was shown a straight red card, reducing the visitors to ten men. Atlanta, already in control, managed the final minutes professionally to see out the result.

In the end, Atlanta United’s response to an early setback highlighted their attacking cohesion and defensive organization. With standout performances from Lobjanidze and Miranchuk, the hosts secured a deserved victory, while Montréal were left to reflect on missed opportunities and a lack of cutting edge after their bright start.
