In a tightly contested, physically intense match at BMO Stadium, the Portland Timbers walked away with all three points thanks to a 45th-minute header from Cristhian Paredes. LAFC, despite generating multiple chances and dominating stretches of the second half, were once again left ruing missed opportunities in a frustrating 1–0 loss on home soil.
Paredes Strikes Before the Break
Portland’s goal — the only one of the night — came just before halftime. After two corners in quick succession, Ian Smith delivered an outswinger into the heart of the box, where Paredes rose highest and guided a powerful header into the top left corner. The xG on the header was just 17%, but the finish was pure class and left Hugo Lloris with no chance.
That strike proved decisive, as LAFC — already trailing — went into the locker room knowing they would have to battle uphill against a well-drilled and physically combative Timbers side.
Second-Half Reaction Falls Short
The second half saw LAFC come out with renewed urgency. Nathan Ordaz had a golden chance in the 56th minute — the best of the game — when his close-range shot (xG 68%) was denied by former LAFC goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau in a reflex save that preserved Portland’s lead.
Kenneth Wilson Nielsen came even closer moments later, crashing a header off the crossbar from a corner (78'), and substitute David Martínez had two promising looks — one narrowly missing the target, the other blocked.
Despite introducing multiple attacking substitutes — including Jeremy Ebobisse, Frankie Amaya, and Javairô Dilrosun — Steve Cherundolo’s side couldn’t break down a resilient Portland back line led by Kamal Miller and Jimer Fory.
Portland's Defensive Wall
The Timbers, under interim coach Phil Neville, showed structure and composure, particularly in the closing stages. They absorbed wave after wave of LAFC pressure, using tactical fouls and set-piece control to disrupt rhythm and kill momentum. Maxime Crépeau was instrumental, making four saves and organizing his defense with authority.
Match Notes & Tactical Themes
LAFC registered 18 total shots, but only five hit the target. Their xG of 1.63 tells the story of missed half-chances and one major let-off.
Portland’s 0.56 xG speaks to their pragmatic, low-block approach — but they took the one clear chance they had.
Cristhian Paredes had a complete performance: game-winning goal, midfield control, and critical fouls to break up LAFC transitions.
Denis Bouanga was lively on the left, creating five chances, but failed to convert under heavy pressure.
Tactical fouling and game management were evident from both sides: 33 total fouls, six yellow cards, and seven second-half substitutions.
