Dynamo Hold On to Edge Past Portland Timbers 1–0

By Sofia Pisano

Houston Dynamo FC secured a narrow 1–0 victory over Portland Timbers in a tightly contested MLS clash at home, with Ezequiel Ponce’s first-half header proving decisive. Despite Portland’s late surge and multiple attempts on goal, the Dynamo’s defense and goalkeeper Jonathan Bond stood firm to maintain the clean sheet.

First Half: Ponce’s Header Gives Dynamo the Lead

The opening half was marked by both teams probing for openings, with Houston gradually asserting control in the attacking third. In the 44th minute, a well-placed cross from Jack McGlynn found Ezequiel Ponce, who rose above the defense to guide a precise header into the bottom right corner, giving Houston a 1–0 lead.

Prior to the goal, both sides had seen efforts blocked or saved. Portland’s Antony Alves Santos tested Bond in the 19th minute with a right-footed strike, while Houston’s Lawrence Ennali and Erik Sviatchenko had their shots blocked, keeping the game tight. Houston’s defensive discipline and quick transitions allowed them to edge the half on top.

Second Half: Portland Presses, Dynamo Hold Firm

Portland Timbers came out determined to equalize, creating multiple chances in the closing stages. Ian Smith and David Da Costa both struck the woodwork in stoppage time, while Matías Rojas and Antony Alves Santos were repeatedly denied by blocks or saves.

Houston countered effectively, with Jack McGlynn and Ezequiel Ponce threatening on the break. Substitutions like Felipe Awodesu and Dillon Samassékou helped the Dynamo maintain energy and protect their lead. Yellow cards were shown to both sides in the second half, reflecting the match’s intensity, but Houston’s defensive organization ensured they held onto their advantage.
