Goalkeepers Shine as Columbus Crew and Chicago Fire Settle for Scoreless Draw

By Alonso Contreras

Columbus Crew and Chicago Fire FC battled to an intense but scoreless 0–0 draw in a physical match in Major League Soccer, where both defenses and goalkeepers ultimately dictated the outcome.

Columbus began the match with early attacking pressure, creating several chances through Max Arfsten and Taha Habroune. In the ninth minute Habroune forced an early save from goalkeeper Chris Brady after a well placed header inside the box. The Crew continued to threaten from set pieces and crosses, but Chicago’s back line held firm.

The visitors responded with their own opportunities, including attempts from Mauricio Pineda and Jonathan Bamba, but Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte remained alert to keep the match level heading into halftime.

The second half delivered the most dramatic moments. In the 51st minute Columbus nearly broke the deadlock during a chaotic sequence inside the penalty area. Habroune produced the best chance of the match with a powerful shot carrying an xG of 66 percent, but Brady reacted brilliantly to deny the effort and preserve the clean sheet.

Chicago gradually grew into the match as the half progressed. Dylan Borso and Robin Lod both tested the Columbus defense, while Bamba created dangerous moments from the left flank. Borso nearly scored in the 71st minute with a header from close range, but Schulte made a key save to keep the score tied.

Late in stoppage time Chicago came closest to stealing the victory. Mbekezeli Mbokazi found space inside the box and fired a powerful shot with an xG of 33 percent, but Schulte produced another excellent save to ensure the match ended without goals.

Both teams showed defensive discipline throughout the contest, with Chicago’s Joel Waterman and Columbus defender Steven Moreira delivering several crucial blocks. Despite numerous chances and a high tempo second half, neither side was able to find the decisive finish.

In the end, the match highlighted strong goalkeeping performances from both Brady and Schulte, leaving Columbus Crew and Chicago Fire FC to share the points after a hard fought stalemate.
