SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The San Jose Earthquakes let a lead slip away, drawing 1-1 against Vancouver Whitecaps FC this Saturday night at PayPal Park in a match pitting the top two teams in the MLS Western Conference against one another.
The San Jose squad started with intensity and struck quickly on the scoreboard in just the 4th minute, when Preston Judd capitalized on an assist from Paul Marie to open the scoring and ignite celebrations among the home fans.
With the early lead, the Quakes appeared to have emotional control of the match, pressing high and exploiting spaces during transitions. However, as the game progressed, Vancouver began to dominate possession and dictate the pace of play.
During the second half, San Jose adopted a much more passive stance following their opening goal, sitting deep in their own half and completely ceding the initiative to the Whitecaps. The team managed by Bruce Arena opted to defend their lead and look for counter-attacking opportunities, but the constant pressure from the Canadian side eventually tilted the field in their favor.
Vancouver controlled over 70 percent of possession and generated constant attacking threats, forcing goalkeeper Daniel to intervene on several occasions to keep the Earthquakes' lead intact.
The visitors' persistence finally paid off in the 76th minute, when Sebastian Berhalter appeared inside the box to score the equalizer, momentarily silencing the crowd at PayPal Park.
Despite the draw, San Jose remains near the top of the Western Conference standings, continuing to demonstrate solidity during one of the best starts to a season in the club's recent history.
Nevertheless, the match also raised questions regarding the team's ability to go against high-caliber opponents and how they respond in those situations.
The draw leaves the two clubs separated by just a few points in the race for the conference lead, in a season where both the Quakes and the Whitecaps are shaping up to be serious contenders within MLS in their conference.
The Quakes are back at PayPal next Saturday against FC Dallas
