Toronto FC 2–1 Columbus Crew: Late Zimmerman Header Seals Comeback Victory

By Ruben Santa-Cruz

Columbus struck early and looked in control for large stretches of the first half. In just the 4th minute, Wessam Abou Ali powered home a header from close range, finishing off a well-worked move assisted by Max Arfsten and Dylan Chambost to give the visitors a 1–0 lead.

Toronto responded with intensity, creating several chances before halftime. Josh Sargent forced a strong save early on, while Dániel Sallói and Jonathan Osorio both came close, but Patrick Schulte stood firm to preserve Columbus’ advantage heading into the break.

The second half saw a much more aggressive Toronto side, and their persistence paid off in the 56th minute. José Cifuentes leveled the match with a composed finish from the center of the box after a well-built sequence involving Sallói and Richie Laryea.

Columbus had opportunities to retake the lead, with Diego Rossi hitting the post and multiple efforts forcing saves from Luka Gavran, who delivered a standout performance between the posts.

As the match entered its final moments, Toronto found the breakthrough. In the 83rd minute, Zimmerman rose highest to meet a pinpoint delivery from Djordje Mihailovic, heading the ball into the bottom corner to complete the comeback and make it 2–1.

The closing minutes were tense, with Columbus pushing forward through corners and late attempts, but Toronto’s defense held firm. Frustration boiled over in stoppage time as Jamal Thiaré picked up a yellow card, sealing the visitors’ fate.

Final Score: Toronto FC 2–1 Columbus Crew

A resilient comeback and a decisive late goal give Toronto all three points, while Columbus will rue missed chances in a match that slipped away in the final stages.
